Juicy Jive
Bananas give juices a luscious thick texture, but there’s a reason why they are added in a blender rather than put through the juicer. They don’t contain that much juice, and it’s really the banana pulp that you’re after to add its flavor.
Spiced Papaya, Pineapple, and Citrus
1½2 large papaya or 2 small papayas
¼ pineapple
2 oranges
1 grapefruit
¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
2 papaya spears for garnish (optional)

1. Peel papaya, discard seeds, and cut fruit into 2-inch cubes. Cut pineapple off rind and into 2-inch cubes. Peel oranges and cut into quarters. Peel grapefruit and cut into sixths.
2. Push papaya, pineapple, oranges, and grapefruit through the juicer, and process until juiced. Pour juice into two glasses, and stir 1½8 teaspoon cinnamon into each.
3. Serve immediately, garnished with papaya spears if desired.
Variation: To pulp this recipe in a blender or food processor fitted with a steel blade, discard seeds from papaya, remove seeds from oranges and grapefruit, and cut all ingredients into pieces no larger than 1 inch. If using a blender or food processor, add cinnamon along with other ingredients.
Liquid Lingo
Cinnamon is the inner bark of a tropical evergreen tree that’s harvested during the rainy season and then allowed to dry. At that time it’s sold ground or as sticks. What we call cinnamon is cassia cinnamon, and there’s also a Ceylon cinnamon that is less pungent.

Guava is a fragrant tropical fruit that is oval and can range in size from an egg to a medium apple. The thin skin can be any color from yellow to purple black, and the aromatic sweet flesh is usually bright red. Allow green ones to ripen at room temperature.
