book. Jena, this is the second book I’ve dedicated to you, the first book of our marriage, and the first book (though surely not the last) inspired by you. This book would not exist without your fearless commitment to self-education. You are my everything.

4 See Gladwell’s discussion, in Outliers, of the Michigan Law School study, which found that minority students—despite being admitted with lower grades and test scores, as a part of affirmative action, and despite earning lower grades in law school—went on to have law careers every bit as successful as their white peers. (Kindle edition, locations 1050–1059.) “Being a successful lawyer is about a lot more than IQ,” Gladwell concludes, to explain the findings of the study. (Kindle edition, locations 1105–1114.)

5 I want to make clear that while I think certain of Gladwell’s points in his book support the basic message of my book, I doubt he himself would agree with much in my book overall. Later in his book, he argues that more hours in school training hard in academic subjects, not fewer hours, is essential for inner-city kids’ success.

3 One of his product lines, the David DeAngelo series of trainings for men, is quite controversial. The early trainings in the series focus on helping men “pick up” women through pickup lines, tricks, and cocky attitudes. However, later trainings focus on authentic communication, meaningful relationships, and personal transformation. Eben states openly that the sequence is intentional, designed to bring in the vast majority of men who would never go straight for the more touchy-feely stuff first. One of his philosophies is “sell them what they want, and give them what they need.” It’s like those enterprising churches that, instead of “preaching to the converted,” bring in rock bands and cagefighting matches to lure hormonal teenagers to church, and then give them a dose of spirituality and uplift along with it.

12 There is a distinction between giving without an expectation of return and just giving randomly to every stranger you pass. Some people advocate the latter, at least in rhetoric, but it doesn’t seem realistic to me, and frankly I don’t tend to see the people who preach this practicing what they preach. Energy and attention are limited, and I think most of it should be focused on giving to people with whom you’re building long-term, meaningful relationships. Of course, the network you’re building should contain both people who are further along the path to success than you, who are pulling you up from above, and people who are earlier
