in their development of success, whom you’re pulling up even as you are pulled up by others. In other words, this philosophy has all the room in the world for charity for those poorer and less fortunate than ourselves. But if you’re giving to poor people with no intention or effort at building a relationship or any human bonds—drive-by charity—it’s basically patronizing, it reinforces the divisions that already exist between you, and I don’t think that form of charity does them or you much good in the long run.

The best giving, I believe, is giving in the context of building meaningful, long-term human bonds with those we’re helping: giving when there is an explicit intention to form a meaningful human connection over time, one in which you both impact, give to, and learn from each other in your own ways, growing and developing together.
