Cake Out!


What’s better than cake? The answer is not much else. Unless, of course, we’re talking about cakes that look like other delicious foods. Cakes so realistic and tempting, your brain will hurt almost as much as your stomach in its attempt to digest the culinary trick we like to call a “cake out.”

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

2 eggs

1½ cups Coke

Whipped cream

Maraschino cherries


Mix together flour and baking powder. Add eggs and Coke and mix until a batter is formed. Pour 1/3 cup batter into a funnel, dropper, or turkey baster and pour into a skillet filled with oil. Fry for a minute on each side.

Serve warm, garnished with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Hungarian sausage used for the players’ bodies

Black olives for team one’s helmets

White mini mozzarella balls for team two’s helmets

3 sheets shortcrust pastry

¼ cup carrots, diced

¼ cup potatoes, diced

2 garlic cloves, diced

4 cups gravy

3 sheets puff pastry

1 egg, beaten


14 PIES:

Chunky beef

Beef, bacon, and cheese

Beef bolognese

Beef and potato

Beef and red chilli beans

Beef, tomato, and onion

Lamb, rosemary, and Shiraz

Steak, mushroom, and Guinness

Chicken, leek, and corn

Moroccan chicken

Tandoori chicken

Chickpea and curried vegetable with eggplant and coconut-milk sauce

Dhansak and curried vegetables

Tomato, coriander, and lentil

Line a large greased oven dish with shortcrust pastry. Preheat oven to 350°F and prebake for about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. In a medium saucepan, sauté the carrots, potatoes, and garlic in olive oil or butter until soft. Add the gravy and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes. Line up the pies inside the dish, standing them on their sides. Add enough gravy to the dish so it comes to roughly ½ inch below the top of the dish. Cover with a layer of puff pastry. Brush pastry with the beaten egg. Bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.

Frito Pie

1 snack-size bag Fritos corn chips

1 can chili

Shredded cheddar cheese

Sour cream

Diced onion

Green chili peppers

Jalapeños


With scissors, cut an opening in the middle of the Fritos bag and pull back to expose corn chips. Pour heated chili over corn chips. Add a generous helping of cheddar cheese. Top with sour cream, diced onion, green chili peppers, and jalapeños.

Bacon Cinnamon Rolls

1 container bacon strips

1 container cream cheese

1 roll ready-to-cook cinnamon rolls

Cook the bacon in a pan until one side is mostly done—but not fully cooked through. Dry the bacon of grease, then slather the mostly cooked side of the bacon with cream cheese. Unroll the cinnamon rolls on a hard surface. Place the cream cheese–slathered bacon onto the unrolled
