49. The chorus is one of the highlights of Verdi's third opera, Nabucco; there have been suggestions that it should be made the official national anthem. The Northern League views it as an allegory of their own liberation from the Italian state and as a work of northern genius despite the fact that Verdi himself was a committed if somewhat unorthodox Italian nationalist. For obvious reasons, it has had resonance in Israel and even in Greece. It was probably the inspiration of the words that he set to this piece that kept Verdi inspired to work on the composition of opera at the most critical juncture in his life despite the loss of his first wife and both his children (Toye 1931, 21-25 ).
