The approach of 2012 is bringing personal changes into all aspects of your life. Relationships, careers, interests, goals, and even your belief system are undergoing radical change. What do the two key words purification and awakening mean in your life? How will this time period affect you?

Maybe you’re noticing signs of heightened awareness or are having thoughts and feelings you never expected. This chapter helps you chart your way through the personal challenges and revelations you may be experiencing and provides tips and tools to help you adjust.

2012 Awakening

According to the 2012 prophecies, we are in the midst of both the death of the old and the birth of something new. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no question that uncertainty is stressful. It requires that you learn new ideas, skills, and behaviors. Just as science and society are developing creative insights and problem-solving abilities, you, too, may be called on to change at a deeper level.

The Mayan prophecy predicts the coming of a Golden Age. (We don’t think they’re referring to the cost of gold reaching $1,000!) According to the mystics, it signifies a time when humans undergo an evolution of consciousness. This means you can experience your higher spiritual and human potential. You can outgrow ingrained habits and belief systems and live a happier, more fulfilling life. It means that by experiencing more of yourself you can develop a deeper relationship with life. Often personal growth and changes in consciousness coincide with overcoming big challenges. In that case, this is a golden opportunity!

Increased Sensitivity

Maybe you’re already becoming more sensitive to the approaching changes. Are you finding yourself feeling events of the evening news more poignantly or wanting to spend more time with friends and neighbors? You may be feeling the effects of the coming fifth age. Here are some indicators that you are tuning in to the times:

◆ Becoming interested in new, unusual ideas and activities

◆ Having shifts in attitudes

◆ Approaching problems in new ways

◆ Wanting to spend more time outside in nature

◆ Feeling an urgency to get things done

◆ Noticing increased synchronicity

◆ Being drawn toward a simple, natural lifestyle

◆ Feeling more connected to people and animals

◆ Experiencing strange sensations in your body such as vibrations, electric currents, or shock-like jolts

◆ Standing up for yourself when confronted

◆ Having unexpected opportunities fall into your lap

◆ Feeling emotions more deeply and having more empathy for others

◆ Desiring to be of service to others

◆ Noticing quick results from positive thinking

Increased Stress

As exciting as new growth is, you may also be experiencing the challenging aspects of change. Remember, this is the death of the old as well as the birth of the new! People grow at different speeds, and what we like at one stage in life doesn’t always fit another. If you’re experiencing more friction than usual, don’t take it personally; it could just be the shock waves of change. On the other hand, you may want to pay particular attention to the tips in the upcoming chapters and avoid as much unneeded stress as possible. Here are some of the more difficult indicators of the times:

◆ Feeling that many of your relationships are strained as the old doesn’t fit anymore

◆ Feeling that long-standing goals are falling apart

◆ Feeling a sense of agitation and unrest

◆ Losing and breaking things due to lack of attention

◆ Having trouble staying focused on mundane matters

◆ Losing interest in activities you always enjoyed

◆ Feeling polarized with family members and friends over politics or worldviews

◆ Feeling the magnification of your fears

◆ Feeling overly sensitive to others

◆ Having
