The third sign is the arrival of longhorn cattle. They’re described as “strange beasts” similar to the buffalo but with larger horns. They overrun the land that was once the home of buffalo and Native tribes.

The fourth sign is the coming of the railroad tracks, described by White Feather as “snakes of iron.”

The fifth sign is the erection of power lines and cables, which are as a “giant spider’s web” crisscrossing the land.

The sixth sign is the construction of concrete roads across the landscape. The description of the roads includes the fact that over long stretches they have mirage-producing effects.

The seventh sign relates to pollution. It tells of “the sea turning black, and many living things dying.” This is believed to refer to oil spills in the ocean.

The eighth sign is this: “You will see many youths who wear their hair long like our people, come and join the tribal nations to learn our ways and wisdom.” This is thought to refer to the hippie movement of the 1960s.

The ninth and final sign talks of a “dwelling place in the heavens” that falls from the sky. It’s described as looking like a “blue star” and will herald the end of the ceremonies of the Hopi people. Some people think this sign was fulfilled with the bringing down of Russian space station Mir in 2001. Others think it refers to a comet that will arrive in the sky sometime during the end times.

The Blue Star

The prophecy states that if society continues down the black road there will be a time when the Hopi ceremonies that keep the world in balance will be suspended. According to Frank Waters, this will occur “after the Blue Kachina removes his mask while performing a ceremonial dance in the plaza before non-Hopi’s.”

Celestial Connection

Comet Hyakutaki in January 1996, Comet Neat in December 2002, and Comet Holmes in November 2007 have all been considered the Blue Star. The Blue Star is to be followed by a red comet seven years later. People are searching the skies.

Performing sacred ceremony in front of the white man is considered taboo among traditional Hopi Elders, so this represents a breach in tradition. The Blue Kachina may be the same as the Blue Star in the ninth sign and is often called the “Blue Star Kachina.” Many think this sign was fulfilled with the falling of the Russian space station Mir in 2001. Others think it relates to a comet.

The Last Sign: End Times

At least eight of the nine prophecies have been met, putting us pretty near the end times. Five years is a number that echoes along the hallways when this subject is discussed. The last part of White Feather’s warning is the description of the end times themselves. It sounds strangely familiar but with added detail.

The prophecy describes atomic bombs, calling them “columns of smoke and fire,” which cause people to die in great numbers and leave behind a strange disease. The bomb had “great heat, equal to the heat of a sun.” It’s often referred to as a “gourd of ashes” that when dropped upon the earth “will boil everything within a large space and nothing will grow for a very long time.” The development of the atomic bomb is a prelude to the destruction of the fourth world.

Waters reports that the destruction of the fourth world coincides with the earth “rocking to and fro.” Also there will be war with the people who “possessed the first light of wisdom.” This is an interesting description of the Middle East, where many aspects of civilization first developed.

The people who will be safe through all this will be those who continued to follow the ways of the Great Spirit, who understood the prophecy, and who lived in the protected lands of the Hopi. After the destruction of the fourth world, these will be the people left to rebuild. They won’t have to do it alone, however, as Pahana (the true white brother) returns to help. With his arrival comes the beginning of the fifth age. White Feather says, “He [Pahana] shall plant the seeds of his wisdom in their hearts. Even now the seeds are being planted. These shall smooth
